An international coalition of nations has committed to a groundbreaking renewable energy pact that aims to achieve 80% clean energy generation globally by 2035, far exceeding previous climate targets.

The agreement, signed by representatives from 142 countries at this week’s Global Climate Summit, establishes binding commitments for renewable energy expansion, phasing out coal power, and investing in next-generation clean energy technologies including advanced nuclear and green hydrogen.

“This represents the most ambitious coordinated climate action in history,” said UN Climate Chief Maria Santos. “We’re not just setting targets anymoreโ€”we’re creating enforceable pathways with real accountability mechanisms.”

The pact includes $500 billion in financing for developing nations to transition away from fossil fuels, addressing long-standing equity concerns about the costs of climate action. Major economies have agreed to increase their renewable energy capacity fivefold within the next decade.

Environmental groups cautiously welcomed the agreement while emphasizing the need for immediate implementation. Scientists note that achieving these targets could limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, avoiding the most catastrophic climate scenarios.
