City officials have approved a transformative $200 million urban renewal project that will convert a former industrial district into a mixed-use neighborhood featuring affordable housing, green spaces, and community facilities.

The Riverside District Revitalization Plan will transform 50 acres along the waterfront into a vibrant community hub over the next four years. The project prioritizes sustainable development, with all buildings meeting net-zero energy standards and extensive use of recycled materials.

“This represents our vision for inclusive urban development,” said Mayor Jennifer Torres at the project announcement. “We’re not just building housingโ€”we’re creating a complete neighborhood where people of all income levels can thrive.”

The development will include 800 residential units with 40% designated as affordable housing, a community center, public library branch, and three parks connected by bike paths and pedestrian walkways. Local businesses will receive incentives to establish operations in the district.

Community input shaped the final design through extensive public consultations. Construction is expected to begin in spring 2026, with the first phase of housing and amenities scheduled for completion by late 2027. The project is projected to create 2,000 jobs during construction and 500 permanent positions.
